Questions, answered.
A few things you might want to know before starting a piece.
What does SideBox Studios make?
Custom 3D-printed pieces inspired by real places: trail and route maps, relief maps of meaningful places and ski resort maps.
How does a custom request work?
Tell us about the place through the contact form. We can discuss the idea and whether a piece is possible, but requests are not orders. No payment or production is available through this website yet.
Can a piece start from my own GPS track?
Yes. Route pieces can start from a track you recorded. Describe the route in your request first. Once we have talked it through, you can email the GPX file, or a share link from an app such as Strava, AllTrails or Garmin, to contact@sideboxstudios.com. Please do not attach route files to the contact form or post private routes publicly.
How are pieces made?
Each piece is 3D printed in PLA, mostly with a matte finish, layer by layer, and finished by hand in our studio. Up close you will see fine layer lines. We keep them because they are part of the texture.
What sizes can you make?
Trail and route pieces are usually about 150, 180 or 250 mm on the longest side, and a 180 mm piece fits an 8 x 10 in frame. Ski resort pieces are usually about 180 mm. Decorative terrain maps can be much larger: the biggest so far fills a 16 x 24 in frame. Larger sizes are possible on request, and we agree the size with you before anything is printed.
How long does a piece take?
It depends on the size, detail and finishing of the piece. We agree on a timeline with you before any order is placed, rather than promising one time for every piece.
How much does a piece cost?
There is no checkout or fixed price list yet. The size, detail and options would affect a future quote, which you would review before any order is placed.
Do you ship?
Yes. We ship within the US, and international shipping is available on request. Orders are not open yet; shipping costs and timing for a future piece would be agreed before an order is placed. We do not offer customer pickups.
Can I cancel or return a piece?
The site currently takes inquiries, not orders. For a future custom order, after you approve the final digital model, we will not accept cancellation or a return for a change of mind. If a piece is damaged, defective, the wrong item or different from the approved model, contact us so we can review a repair, replacement or refund as appropriate. Your legal rights still apply.
Are the ski pieces official resort products?
No. SideBox Studios is independent and is not affiliated with or endorsed by any ski resort, trail or land manager. Place, trail and resort names are used only to describe the terrain a piece shows.
